How to Make CBD Oil at Home in Just 7 Easy Steps
Making your own CBD oil at home is easy to do and offers many benefits. You can add it to your favorite foods, drinks and more. This way, you’ll always have it on hand and can save money in the long run!
Step 1: Gather the ingredients
First, gather your ingredients. You’ll need:
- 1/2 cup dried cannabis buds (the amount will depend on how much oil you want to make)
- 1/2 cup carrier oil (like olive or coconut)
- Dark glass bottle with a dropper (you can buy them online or at any health food store)
Step 2: Prepare the cannabis
You’re going to want your cannabis to be dried and cured before making your CBD oil, because this process will help preserve its potency and effectiveness. If you’re using fresh buds, they should be dried in a dark place with low humidity for at least two weeks before grinding up into a fine powder. If you already have dried or cured bud in storage, go ahead and get it out now; just make sure it’s stored in an airtight container in a dark place until ready for use!

Step 3: Decarboxylate your cannabis
Now it’s time to decarboxylate your cannabis. Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis to activate cannabinoids by converting THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This process also converts CBDA into CBD, so you can make both CBD oil and THC oil with this method by switching up which strain of marijuana you use.
THCA is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you high on its own; however, when heated or cooked at a certain temperature for long enough time periods–in this case about 240 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes–it will become fully activated as THC!
Step 4: Choose an oil and heat it
When it comes to choosing an oil, there are a few options. You can use coconut oil, olive oil or vegetable oil–but canola is not recommended because it has a low smoke point and may burn at high temperatures. Virgin coconut oil is best for this purpose because it has the highest smoke point at about 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176 degrees Celsius).
Step 5: Add cannabis to oil mixture, stir thoroughly and let it sit for 30 minutes
Now that you’ve added the cannabis to your oil mixture, it’s time to stir thoroughly. This is important because you want to make sure that all of the ingredients are well-mixed together and there are no clumps of plant material left behind.
The next step is waiting! You’ll need to let this sit for 30 minutes before moving on with your process so that all of those wonderful cannabinoids have time to bond with each other and form into crystals (that will later become concentrated CBD).
Step 6: Strain oil from plant matter
To strain the oil, use a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer. This will help to remove any plant matter that may be left in your tincture. Coffee filter paper also makes for a good option if you want to make a weaker tincture with less plant material in it (but don’t use this method if you want to make CBD oil that has a strong taste). Avoid using metal strainers as they can affect the taste and consistency of your final product!
Step 7 (optional): Add essential oils
To get high quality CBD oil, it is best to take responsibility for the entire process. This includes planting plants with carefully selected cannabis seeds, caring for plants, and finally making oil. After all that, if you decide to add an essence to your oil, pay attention to the quality of those oils.
You can also add essential oils like peppermint or lavender essential oil for flavor and medicinal purposes! Essential oils are a great way to add flavor to your CBD oil. They also have many health benefits, including helping you relax and sleep better, reducing anxiety and depression symptoms, fighting infections by stimulating the immune system, improving digestion (peppermint), aiding respiratory problems such as asthma (lavender), relieving muscle soreness from exercise or illness (wintergreen).
You can use up to 10 drops of essential oil per ounce of hemp extract if you’d like–but don’t go overboard!
What are the benefits of using CBD oil?
People who suffer from anxiety often find it difficult to relax and unwind after a long day at work or school. When this happens repeatedly over time, they may develop chronic stress that can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.
CBD oil helps reduce stress by acting as an anxiolytic agent — meaning it has anti-anxiety effects on the brain. This is because CBD interacts with receptors in our brain called CB1 receptors which regulate mood and behavior while also playing an important role in regulating our endocannabinoid system (ECS).
